UK Dredging (UKD), the dredging arm of Associated British Ports (ABP), has recently completed a maintenance dredging project for the Port of Rotterdam.

Over a four-week period, UKD Marlin, a trailing suction hopper dredger, dredged the silt traps at Rotterdam’s first, second and third petroleum harbours and at the nearby harbours of Waalhaven and Botlek. The silt was deposited at designated areas off the coast, and contaminated material was dredged and pumped through a 4,700 m pipeline. During adverse weather conditions, sand was also dredged from the Oude Maas – a side river off Rotterdam Waterway - and deposited in Eernhaven harbour, an area which will be developed in the future.

Gareth Pollit, General Manager, UKD, said:

“It is very satisfying to make a successful return to Holland. We are building a reputation, in the UK and on the Continent, for providing an extremely efficient and cost-effective dredging service.”

UKD Marlin carried out maintenance dredging at Egmond Aan Zee, some 45 miles north of Rotterdam, last year. In 1998, another of UKD’s dredgers, UKD Bluefin, completed a three-week dredging project for the Port of Rotterdam.
