UK Dredging (UKD), the dredging arm of Associated British Ports (ABP), has successfully received International Safety Management (ISM) certification for its fleet of dredging vessels, well ahead of the mandatory date in July 2002.

Achievement of ISM certification is determined by a company’s compliance with both ship- and shore-based safety procedures. In order to assess UKD’s suitability, the Maritime & Coastguard Agency conducted a thorough audit of the safety management systems in place at UKD’s head office in Barry, and subsequently awarded the company with its Document of Compliance. Each UKD dredger* was then subjected to a similar audit and, after achieving exceptional results, was individually awarded the Ships' Safety Management Certificate.

Vincent Scerri, UKD's Safety Manager and Designated Person Ashore who oversaw the company’s ISM accreditation process, said:

"Our early compliance with the ISM Code demonstrates UKD's total commitment to safety and I am delighted that we have achieved full accreditation. The UKD team, particularly the Masters, Ships' Safety Officers and Chief Engineers, has worked hard to ensure the process was a smooth one.”

UKD has developed its own formal safety management system which reflects the requirements of the ISM Code, but which is also based on the strong safety foundations already established by ABP. Accreditation with the ISM Code - which ensures that companies comply with objectives including safe practice regarding both personnel and the environment – will become mandatory for cargo ships, including dredgers of a minimum 500 gross tonnage.
