UK DREDGING CHRISTENS BRAND-NEW VESSEL
UK Dredging (UKD), the dredging arm of Associated British Ports (ABP), is set to build on its position as the UK’s leading maintenance-dredging company with the arrival of a brand-new vessel, UKD Sealion. The vessel was officially christened today, Tuesday, 11 March, by the Lady Sponsor, Mrs Gunilla Lerenius – wife of Bo Lerenius, Group Chief Executive, ABP Holdings PLC, at a service of naming and dedication held at ABP’s Port of Cardiff.
UKD Sealion, a dredging-support vessel and sister-ship of UKD Seahorse, was built at a cost of £1.5 million by Damens Shipyards in Romania. She will undertake dredging-support services at ABP’s ports throughout the UK, as well as carry out third-party works in Europe. In addition, Sealion will act as the buoy-handling vessel for ABP’s Port of Southampton, where she will be stationed for around four months of the year.
Budha Majumdar, ABP Port Director, South Wales Ports, and the director responsible for UKD, said:
“This new vessel - representing a sizeable investment by ABP – will provide valuable support to UKD’s existing fleet. UKD has had significant success in securing external customer contracts and, with the help of UKD Sealion, I am confident that we can build on this success for the long term.”
